    The Expedited Specialist Pathway currently applies to selected qualifications in:

    • General Practice
    • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
    • General Paediatrics

    • Psychiatry

    Additional specialties are expected to be added in the future.

    It allows you to apply for provisional registration so you can undertake a period of supervised practice and become eligible for general registration.

  • Outside Australia or New Zealand (International Medical Graduate) Stream

  • Result: Short-term Training in a Medical Specialty

  • This pathway is designed for international doctors who are currently undertaking specialist training overseas and have less than two years of training remaining. It allows eligible applicants to complete a period of approved specialist training in Australia before returning to their home training program.

    Short-term training positions are typically approved for a defined period and are intended to provide exposure to specific clinical skills, techniques or healthcare systems rather than leading directly to specialist registration in Australia.

    Applicants must meet the Medical Board of Australia's registration requirements and obtain support from an approved training position.

    You will need to apply to the relevant specialist college for an assessment of comparability to an Australian trained specialist. the college will assess your qualifications, training and experience against the standards expected of an Australian-trained specialist in your chosen specialty.

  • Outside Australia or New Zealand (International Medical Graduate) Stream

  • Result: Specialist Pathway – Area of Need

  • This pathway is designed for specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) who have been offered a specialist-level position in an approved Area of Need in Australia. It enables eligible doctors to practise in workforce shortage locations while meeting the requirements of their registration.

    It does not lead directly to specialist registration. Area of Need positions are typically located in workforce shortage regions where there is a demonstrated need for specialist medical services. Eligible doctors may be able to practise in these roles while progressing through the relevant assessment and registration requirements

    The Specialist Pathway – Area of Need If you intend to practise in Australia long-term, you may also wish to apply simultaneously for the Specialist Pathway, which involves assessment by the relevant Australian specialist medical college to determine comparability with an Australian-trained specialist and may lead to specialist registration.

    Based on your responses, the Limited Registration for Teaching or Research Pathway appears to be the most appropriate option.
  • Outside Australia or New Zealand (International Medical Graduate) Stream

  • This pathway is designed for doctors who wish to undertake clinical teaching, academic research, or university-based appointments in Australia. It may also be suitable for internationally recognised experts who wish to demonstrate a specialised clinical technique or procedure for a short period, typically without meeting the requirements of another registration pathway.

    It may also be suitable for internationally recognised experts who have been invited to demonstrate a specialised clinical technique, procedure or area of expertise for a defined period, without necessarily meeting the requirements of another registration pathway.

    This registration type is generally limited to the specific teaching, research, or clinical demonstration activities approved by the Medical Board of Australia.
